Beach Street Penang

India House is a double-storey building in George Town. It is located on the corner of Beach Street and Church Street Ghaut, and carries an address on both streets. India House was built by S.N.A.S Sockalingam Chettiar in 1937 in the Indian Art Deco style and finished in Shanghai plaster. Today it appears a bit worn down, but when it was first built, it was the highest assessment payer along expensive Beach Street (Abdulah Abdul Samad, 2004).

The Standard Chartered Bank Building on Beach Street is a stout four-storey structure in British Palladian style. The Chartered bank of India, China and Australia arrived on Penang shores in 1875, making it the oldest bank branch in Malaysia. It is one of the two British exchange banks in this region; the other being the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank directly on the opposite side of the road. The present building was completed in 1930, and is houses the bank today. The building displays a combination of elements drawn from the Palladian, Classical and Art Deco architectural styles (Sieh, 2000).

Logan's Building is a two-storey block of shops fronting Beach Street and Union Street in George Town. It is located within the core zone of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Logan's Building was known after James Richardson Logan, the lawyer commemorated with the Logan Memorial. One of the most charming - yet often overlooked feature of the Logan's Building is its central arch defining a granite-paved porte-cochère, which in the old days led to a courtyard for carriages (Musa, 2000).

The 1886 building - so named for the year of its construction is probably the oldest commercial building on Beach Street that has retained its original appearance. It used to house Goon Yen & Friends, an upmarket emporium - one of the first inGeorge Town to be owned by non-whites. Upmarket shops and offices, including Howarth Erskine Engineers occupied the rest of the building (Asnizal Haidy Jasni, 2001).

On the upper floors are lovely French windows that open out to cast iron balconies - they were fortunate to have survived till this day, as metal were taken away by the occupying Japanese forces during the war. Topping the building is a dentilated cornice and a parapet wall.

George Town Dispensary building was initially designed to be two storeys high in 1922. Some alterations had to be carried out that same year to accommodate the additional storey. On the Beach Street side is a five-foot way with the dispensary behind it. On this side of the building is the signage George Town Dispensary (Asnizal Haidy Jasni, 2001)

The Penang Immigration Department Building or Bangunan Jabatan Immigresen is an impressive double storey building which was built in 1890. It is located within the compound of the Central Police Station, and was originally intended to house the administrative office of the police force (Musa, 2000)The building has a porte cochere facing north. The walls of the ground floor is done in imitation rustication with key stoning at the arches. The top of the building features moulded cornice underlining a blustered parapet (Asnizal Haidy Jasni, 2001).

The White ways building was constructed in the early 1900's. On the upper floor are beautiful windows in the eclectic style. These are accentuated by moulded plaster. The facade is decorated with plasterwork of flowers and garlands. At the time of writing (18 June 2008), the Whiteways Building was undergoing restoration work (Musa, 2000).

The Penang Islamic Council Building, or Majlis Jabatan Agama Islam Pulau Pinang, is a double storey Neoclassical-style building along Beach Street in George Town, Penang. It was originally part of the Government Offices complex during the British Administration. The building was constructed in 1907, and is richly ornamented. This is the pinnacle of colonial architecture in the Straits Settlements during Edwardian times. The building was originally part of a U-shaped ensemble that faced the section of Light Street. (This section of Light Streetwas later renamed King Edward Place and now called Pesara King Edward.) Most of the British administrative offices are housed in this building and its adjacent sections (Musa, 2000).

The HSBC Building of Penang is an elegant six-storey building built in 1948 in the late Art Deco style at 1 Downing Street, George Town. The design reflects the influence of the Shanghai Art Deco style. The first two floors are rusticated while the four upper floors carry a different façade treatment  (Asnizal Haidy Jasni, 2001).

This is the first branch of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank in Malaya. It was established in 1884. It's first permanent buildingwas built in 1906. It had a Neo-Classical style, with a domed tower at the corner of Beach Street and Downing Street, very much similar to the ABN-Amro Bank Building next door. However, this building was destroyed during the Second World War and was replaced by the present structure, which happened to be one of the first buildings to be completed after the war (Asnizal Haidy Jasni, 2001).
